Thanks to Todd Jarvis for sending this my way.
"Americans are not accustomed to paying, and have been largely unaware of, the true cost of treating and delivering clean, safe water to their taps. Americans pay less for water – about a penny per gallon on average – than do residents of most other developed nations. Water is also typically the lowest percentage utility cost per household, less than gas/oil, telephone and electricity." - Maureen Duffy, The Value of Water (from the Executive Summary).
"I conceive that the great part of the miseries of mankind are brought upon them by false estimates they have made of the value of things." -- Benjamin Franklin

... The Value of Water ... From Maureen Duffy at American Water ... I need to admit that whenever I read buzz words like “value” and “water” attributed to a spokesperson affiliated with a for-profit-corporate-water-entity it makes the hair on the back of my neck tingle.
Value for corporate water interest$ is buzz for increased profits, higher stock prices, greater executive compensation and most often has little to do with the actual cost of production and delivery of water.
I am not aware of any for-profit- corporate-water-entity that does not engage in high stakes brinksmanship when it comes to pricing the water they sell, including but not limited to high stakes PR, convoluted legal actions, extensive political lobbying and campaign $upport to favored candidate$ ...
Were the legacy of American Water to actual reveal they choose full disclosure and transparency in all water issues I could then find a bit of truth in Ms. Duffy’s presentation.
