 Here are more details. Try not to use whisky that is too watered down. 

The alcohol is less dense than the water, so it will rise at the edge of the glass and displace the water, which will move down into the lower glass. If the card were porous then the movement would occur through the card. 

It works with rum, preferably Flor De Caña. Trust me on this.
