Five years ago today I started WaterWired with the following thoughtful missive:
Thanks for stopping by and reading the initial post of WaterWired.
My objectives in establishing this blog are:
1) Providing my perspective on today's water and related issues, regardless of where they may be - the Pacific Northwest, the rest of the USA, or the developing/developed world;
2) Illustrating the many facets of water - as a life-giver, commodity, resource, nuisance, weapon, vehicle for cooperation, instigator of conflict, subject matter for literature/art, etc.;
3) Soliciting and listening to your perspectives on water;
4) Satisfying my desire to be a "writer" (gees, I guess "blogger" is the proper term);
5) Educating and entertaining my readers (and myself!); and, above all
6) Stimulating thought and generating controversy (though never for its own sake!)
Again, thanks for visiting, and I hope you will return frequently.
Terribly profound, I know. But I think I have satisifed my objectives.
WaterWired has become an obsession, a healthy one to be sure, although the idea of a 'healthy obsession' borders on oxymoronic. I can honestly say that this has been one of the most of the enjoyable things I've done professionally. I often say to people that this blog has had more of an impact than all my publications multiplied by 10. That may be more of a comment on my publications than WaterWired but I think there is more truth than fiction to that statement.
Thanks to all my readers and commenters. You have made it all worthwhile.
Five more years? Who knows?
By the way, my first 'real' post was published on the same day and titled, Terrorism and Ground Water. It's still relevant today. I attached articles by Peter Gleick and myself, which I will include here as well:

Good reading.
I'll close with the first quote I used on 9 January 2007:
"In the world there is nothing more submissive and weak than water.
Yet for attacking that which is hard and strong,
There is nothing that can surpass it.
-- Lao-tze, 6th century BC

Nice outfit.
You could wear it to class, and if a student falls asleep in the lecture you could ...

Congratulations. I'm an avid reader of WaterWired. I'm not a water or earth scientist, but I love the passion and variety in your work and the significance of the topics you address. Keep up the good work. I blog on water and faith at www.davidknightwrites.blogspot.com - and you truly inspire me.
