TGIF! Weekly Water News Summary, 28 April - 4 May 2012

This week's post comes to you from Calgary, the 'Houston of Canada' located in Alberta, the 'Texas of Canada' (in more ways than just oil and gas). Calgary is the headquarters for Canada's hydrocarbon industry, but it's more like Denver than Houston what with the gorgeous Rocky Mountains in the (more distant than Denver) background. That's the Bow River in the picture.

I am here for 48 hours to participate in  Hydrogeologists Without Borders Board of Directors retreat.

In 'Blue Revolution' Cynthia Barnett Reacquaints Me with the 'Lords of Yesterday'

It has taken me far too long but I just finished Cynthia Barnett's excellent book, Blue Revolution: Unmaking America's Water Crisis.

I will not provide a review of the book, not because I consider Cynthia a friend but because both my wife Mary Frances and I reviewed drafts of a number of chapters.

However I will encourage you to read the book. What I find especially refreshing is her call for a national water ethic and its emphasis on stewardship and intergenerational equity (Gees, I don't sound like a hydrogeologist anymore, but that's fine).

She also does not shy away from discussions of conflicts of interest when it comes to water issues. I cannot recall reading much about those in other tomes. Amen!

So read her book.  

I confess that Blue Revolution provided a double bonus: not only a great read, but it afforded me the rediscovery of Charles F. Wilkinson's "Lords of Yesterday", a term coined in his book, Crossing the Next Meridian: Land, Water, and the Future of the West. Wilkinson attacks five 'lords' for thwarting water sustainability in the US West.

Barnett calls out the Top Five Lords (p. 112):

1) The Hardrock Mining Law of 1872, which dedicates more than half of all public lands to mining as as the preferred use.

2) Public rangeland practices that devastate western ranges and rivers;

3) Forest policy that promotes logging as the dominant use of our national forests;

4) Mega-dams and other wanter-development practices that provided 'cheap power' at a cost we could not fathom until now.

5) Prior-appropriation doctrine, with its 'first in time, first in right; and 'use it (beneficially) or lose it' tenets that worked fine when we were promoting development and settlement of the West but have now mired us in the anachronistic world of 100 or so years ago.  

I am going to reread Wilkinson's book; it's still on my shelf. You should too, after you read Blue Revolution.

I will leave you with a few choice words from Jared Diamond, the author of Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed, in which he examined why some societies succeeded and some failed (Easter Island, early Norse in Greenland, et al.). At a lecture in Albuquerque a few years ago he was asked if there was some common thread that linked those societies that failed. His reply: 

"There was a failure to reexamine and change their core values in the face of change."

Katharine Hayhoe Redux: Movie Star!

Once again, here is climate scientist Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, this time speaking on - what else - climate change, especially what it means at the local (personal) scale.

Bike to work. Hug a tree. Eat granola. Live off the grid. Wear hemp. Bathe in a stream. And worship the earth.

Go ahead. Label us - just because we think global warming is a serious problem that you should know about.

But here's who we really are.

We're Christians. We don't worship the earth. We worship the Creator of the universe. We believe that God spoke the world into existence and sustains it by His power. We believe that Jesus Christ is the way to eternal life, that the Bible is God?s Word, and that nothing compares to the importance of the gospel message.

Now, for what we don't believe. We don't believe the universe came into existence through random chance. We don't believe that life came from nothing or that humans evolved from apes.

We believe in common sense. We believe in the sensible progression from older to newer technologies. Yes, we live in a house with air conditioning. We drive cars. We don't have solar panels on our roof (too expensive), and we're not vegetarians (meat is just too tasty).

Don't worry - we're not going to try to convince you that Earth is four billion years old or that it's young, but with the appearance of age. Even we, the authors, disagree on that one.

Climate change is about thermometers and temperatures. It's about what's been happening on our planet since the Industrial Revolution. It's Chemistry 101. Now, can we talk about global warming?

Great Thoughts in Las Vegas? Try 'The Right to Water: Politics, Governance and Social Struggles'

Las Vegas - a place not conducive to great thoughts, at least not the kind I consider great.

Nor is it conducive to great photography. I couldn't even take a decent picture of the Las Vegas Strip from my Southwest flight. It's more like a picture of the engine of a brightly-painted Boeing 737-700.

I'm down here for a couple of days to attend the NGWA Ground Water Expo. I am staying at the venerable Las Vegas Hilton, a place that once (c. 1976) was the second largest hotel in the world in terms of rooms. It's now nowhere near that position, even in its home city - 15th, to be exact. But it is the largest Hilton Hotel in the world, with almost 3,000 rooms. And it was just renovated in 2008. My room must have been out of town when that occurred.

So where's the water in this post?

Well, for starters, I had a delightful conversation with a new colleague about one of my favorite topics: hydrophilanthropy. And tomorrow I'll attend the annual meeting of the Developing Nations Interest Group, which I founded in 2005.

I also received an email about a new book, The Right to Water: Politics, Governance and Social Struggles. Here is the description:

The right to clean water has been adopted by the United Nations as a basic human right. Yet how such universal calls for a right to water are understood, negotiated, experienced and struggled over remain key challenges. The Right to Water elucidates how universal calls for rights articulate with local historical geographical contexts, governance, politics and social struggles, thereby highlighting the challenges and the possibilities that exist. Bringing together a unique range of academics, policy-makers and activists, the book analyzes how struggles for the right to water have attempted to translate moral arguments over access to safe water into workable claims.
