The message below is from my good friend and colleague, Dave Sabatini at the University of Oklahoma's School of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science and the WaTER Center. He directs the latter.
Disclosure notice: I am speaking at the 31 October 2008 symposium and am one of the jurors for the OU International Water Prize. And you can bet I will be at the 2009 conference!
I want to draw your attention to two upcoming events regarding water and sanitation in developing countries – the first is later this month and the second will be a year from now. The first event is the one-half day OU WaTER Symposium to be held Oct 31, 2008 at the University of Oklahoma. This symposium will feature five international experts on water and sanitation in developing countries that will be on campus to determine the inaugural winner of the OU International Water Prize. More details on the symposium speakers and schedule can be found at the above link.
While I recognize many of you will not be able to join us for the symposium, I wanted to encourage you to “save the date” of Oct 26-27, 2009 for the first OU International WaTER Conference. In addition to the winner of the Water Prize delivering the plenary talk, we will also have other leading experts as keynote speakers as well as an open call for contributed papers. Our goal is to bring together leading people from multiple sectors including academic, NGO, government, industrial and foundation representatives (you can see this diversity reflected in the panel determining the inaugural winner of the WaTER Prize. Having organized conference sessions with three different organizations I see the need for a common ground to pull together people from these different sectors.
Thanks for all each of you do to bring water and sanitation to those in emerging regions. We hope that you can join us for one or both of these exciting events.
All the best,
Dave
Dave is not only an extraordinary engineer/scientist, but truly one of the world's good guys.
