Dr. Todd Jarvis, Associate Director of the Institute for Water and Watersheds, inaugurated our Fall 2009 speaker series on 'Corruption and Ethics in Water Resources' with his excellent presentation, Fuzzy Lines and Phantasmagorias in Water Ethics.
Read Emily Green's excellent take on Jarvis' talk.
If you would like to know more, an excellent anthology is Navigating Rough Waters: Ethical Issues in the Water Industry, edited by Cheryl K. Davis and Robert E. McGinn.
"Action indeed is the sole medium of expression for ethics." -- Jane Addams
First I must confess I did not see completely the presentation: Fuzzy Lines and Phantasmagorias in Water Ethics, though I believe I that which I saw enables me to honorably write these comments.
Truly my own association over the last 35 years principally in the wastewater arena attests to witnessing bizarre images along with an ever changing scene where players interchange as if chameleon.
What I have come to learn is the lure of the almighty dollar is like a moth being inexorably drawn to a flame as I watched those I thought incorruptible transform taking positions which only days before to which they were diametrically opposed.
Our understanding and belief about - water - has over these last 40 years in particularly been stealthily and steadily molded largely without our overt participation.
We use water but remain unaware of how our daily action impact either the quantity or the quality of water. Have we truly become so robotic in our action so that we can no longer acknowledge what we do to water either positively or negatively...?
While truly our relationship with water is indeed in the moment - fuzzy - I see a glimmer of hope as a new paradigm of awareness creeps into our consciousness hopefully striking in each of us the will to act in a manner benefiting all of mankind.
Respectfully submitted,
