Today is Armistice Day (Remembrance Day in the British Commonwealth), when many (mostly in Europe) in the world celebrate the end of World War I (at least on the Western Front) in 1918, which became effective on the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month". 

 

2014 also marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the hostilities. The Guns of August by Barbara Tuchman is the best book I've read about WWI's start. 

 

In the USA we celebrate Veterans Day, when we remember and honor those men and women who served in our armed forces. 

 

Whatever you call it, just remember why we do remember it - not to buy major appliances, furniture, and cars.
